First Meeting for Winter 2014 - 1000 Sculptures

For the first meeting of Winter Quarter 2014, SMAI conducted a session of "1000 Sculptures," asking members to bring in what they could in order to create as many sculptures as they could (target number was 25) within a 30-minute time period.

After the sculptural chaos of cheezits, thumbtacks, nasty candies, and other random items ensued, a critique session followed!

Thank you to those who came out for the meeting, definitely a fun night of impromptu art!

KULT

In the spirit of forging a new future for the undergraduate art community at UCSD, the group-show KULT was organized over the summer by the founding SMA Initiative members and participants to provide a survey of works from eight undergraduate artists: Trevor Anderson, Jacquelyn Bulkowski, Lawrence Chit, Kim Garcia, Alexander McVickar, Elizabeth Stringer, Ashley Trinh, and Charity Vincent.

The opening served as the inauguration of our SMA Initiative Art Club, featuring the usual mingling, food munching, and art-viewing; as well as a live performance by participating artist Jacquelyn Bulkowski. Though the works shown greatly differ in both medium and concept, the show was curated with the utmost professionalism to convey unity and abilities within the collective of undergraduates; really only hinting at the vast possibilities of what students could organize and create.

KULT is only the first of many SMA Initiative shows/events, so look forward to celebrating more art created by UCSD undergraduates!
